Our Mission
ISESS advances the science and practice of systems engineering to support governments, institutions, and organizations in understanding complexity, managing interdependencies, and making informed decisions. Through applied research, professional education, strategic advisory services, and analytical tools, ISESS helps partners design and govern sustainable, resilient, and high-performing systems.

The mission of the Institute for Systems Engineering and Sustainable Systems (ISESS) is to advance the science and practical application of systems engineering to address complex sustainability and governance challenges. The institute works with governments, public institutions, private organizations, and international partners to strengthen how complex systems are designed, managed, and governed.
ISESS operates from the conviction that many of the most pressing challenges facing societies today - climate resilience, infrastructure performance, urban development, energy transition, and institutional reform - are fundamentally systems problems. These challenges arise from interactions among multiple technical, institutional, environmental, and social subsystems. When these interactions are not properly understood or managed, well-intentioned policies and investments often produce fragmented outcomes, inefficiencies, or unintended consequences.
Our mission is therefore to bring the rigor of systems engineering - traditionally applied in aerospace, defense, and industrial systems - into domains where it remains underutilized, particularly sustainability, governance, and public-sector decision-making. By doing so, ISESS seeks to strengthen how institutions understand complexity and design solutions that perform effectively across time and uncertainty.
ISESS fulfills this mission through four complementary functions. First, the institute generates applied knowledge through research that advances systems engineering methods for sustainability and public-sector systems. Second, it builds institutional capability through executive education, professional training, and cohort-based learning programs that equip professionals with systems thinking and analytical tools. Third, ISESS provides strategic advisory services that support governments and institutions in planning and governing complex programs, infrastructure systems, and reforms. Finally, the institute develops analytical tools, models, and digital platforms that translate complex data into actionable insights for decision-makers.
Through these activities, ISESS seeks not only to provide technical expertise but also to strengthen institutional capacity and decision quality. Our goal is to help partners move beyond fragmented approaches toward integrated systems solutions that align technical performance, environmental sustainability, and institutional effectiveness.
In doing so, ISESS contributes to a broader transformation: positioning systems engineering as a practical instrument for sustainable development, resilient infrastructure, and responsible governance in an increasingly complex world.
