ISESS 2005 Announcement
Linda Robson
The conference will tentatively be held at the Hotel do Mar in Sesimbra, Portugal (www.hoteldomar.pt). The hotel is located 40 kms from Lisbon Airport, facing Sesimbra Beach with a fantastic sea view. Sesimbra is one of the most attractive areas of Costa Azul Region, from the impressive cliffs of Espichel Cape, to the Natural Park of Arrabida, added to the serene beaches and the forest of Lagoa de Albufeira.

Next Generation of Environmental Information and Risk Management Systems (EIS/RMS)
Gerald Schimak
The increasing frequency, severity and consequences of floods, forest fires, storms and other natural hazards sensitive to climate changes in Europe, has clearly shown that the state of the art of environmental monitoring and information systems do not fully meet the needs of early warning, alert or (public) information systems...

Distributed and Parallel environmental modelling paradigms
David Swayne
Models of fluid flow, whether weather / climate prediction, hydrological models or groundwater flows are at or near the pinnacle of computational complexity. Supercomputers were designed and built for, among other applications, simulations
of fluid transport.

ICT tools for Ecological and Human Risk Assessment
Jiri Hrebiceck
Ecological and Human Risk Assessment (EcoHumRA) is a complex process of assessing the influence of human activities on ecosystem duality and vice versa. The endpoint of EcoHumRA is a prospective or retrospective assessment of stress factors influence (chemical contaminants, anthropogenic interventions or natural disasters) on ecosystems and their parts. Monitoring and collecting of available information as the source data for EcoHumRA is a key part of the process for the assessor. The availability and quality of input data determines the complexity and feasibility of the process. In the problem description phase it is possible to use
public available high-quality data from on-line Internet databases and web services, e.g. toxicological properties of chemicals, GIS characteristics and maps and so on.

Environmental Engineering education and presentation of
environmental information to non scientists
Kostas D. Karatzas
Environmental Engineering education addresses, among others, the
“generation& of environmental information, management of environmental
knowledge towards addressing real world environmental problems, and
communication of environmental information to non-scientists. Although the
public should be the ultimate beneficiary and focal point of an effective
environmental engineering curriculum, issues of information presentation,
interpretation and perception are rarely addressed in the latter. Thus,
environmental scientists lack the necessary experience to effectively
communicate useful information to the public, i.e. information related to the
quality of their life.

Human Factors in Enviromatics
Daryl Hepting and Steven Frysinger
Environmental Informatics (or Enviromatics) is a maturing subject with interdisciplinary roots. The application of information and communication technology (ICT) to the environment is emerging as one of great importance as the health of our planet gains priority on research agendas. Modelling is an important aspect of enviromatics, but it is not the only one. Ultimately, environmental information must be put into people's hands so that they can make decisions. Answering the question of how best to involve stakeholders so that they can access the information they need and put it to use in a satisfying manner is a topic of ongoing research.

Open Source GIS and Environmental Modeling Systems
Daniel P. Ames and Gerry Laniak
Recent years have witnessed a growth in the quantity and quality of free and open source software (FOSS) tools for use in environmental data analysis and modeling. Such developments have significant potential to aid environmental managers, scientists and stakeholders in both developed and developing countries by reducing initial acquisition costs and providing a level of transparency that is often critical for regulatory, administrative, and on-going code development purposes. While commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) environmental software tools play an important role in the environmental community, the concept of FOSS continues to attract interest among software developers, sponsors and end-users alike.

Artificial and Computational Intelligence for Environmental Modelling
Andrea E. Rizzoli and Ioannis N. Athanasiadis
As environmental modeling and software applications are striving to
provide with solutions in complex and dynamic environments, the research
fields of artificial and computational intelligence try to supply the
right array of tools and techniques to cope with these new challenges.
While AI tackles the problems from the top down, imposing the structure
on the problem, CI starts from the bottom up, discovering structures
from data.

Integrated Modelling and Decision Support Systems for Watershed and
Lake Management – Design and Application
William Booty
Many of the processes and conditions that exist in lakes are controlled by processes and
events that occur in the watersheds around the lake. In order to be able to manage lake
quantity and quality conditions, managers also need tools to understand how to predict
what impacts actions taken within the watersheds will produce, on what scale and over
what time frame in lakes that they discharge to.

Software Tools and Component-Based Environmental Modelling
Robert Argent
Component-based modelling of environmental systems has come to the fore
in recent years, as researchers and developers realise both the
advantages, in terms of efficiency and re-use, and disadvantages, in
terms of technical and conceptual compatibility, of using components.

Ontologies for Knowledge Representation and Reasoning in Environmental Information Systems (Onto/EIS)
Virginia Brilhante
n ontology is an explicit and unifying representation of concepts and their relationships that characterize a knowledge domain. This is surely a valuable resource for Environmental Information Systems (EIS) which, coupled with current information technology, opens up unprecedented possibilities that we are starting to understand and exploit.

Data and Sensor Networks and Environmental Modelling
Dr Robert Argent (The University of Melbourne, Australia)
Dr Gerald Schimak (ARC Seibersdorf Research, Austria)
Dr Nigel Quinn (Berkeley National Laboratory, USA)
Environmental monitoring and information systems are developing rapidly, to the point where on-line data sources and real-time monitoring data can become a robust component of environmental models, as they already are in emergency and early warning systems. Many environmental models are, however, constructed using fixed historical or stochastic data, and are calibrated and parameterised accordingly. This session considers the theory and practice of environmental model design, construction and operation using data from variable sources such as sensor networks, on-line databases and datanets.

FP7 Information Day on ICT for Environmental Management and Energy Efficiency
Dr. Michel SCHOUPPE
This FP7 Information Day is organised by the Information Society and Media Directorate-General (DG INFSO) of the European Commission with the kind support of the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic and the Technology Centre of the Academy of Sciences CG. The aim is to present funding opportunities under the Seventh Framework Programme for research and technological development (FP7) in the field of "Information and Communication Technologies for Environmental Management and Energy Efficiency" (Objective ICT-2007.6.3). Focus will be on research activities carried out by different research bodies in trans-national cooperation with the aim to gain or consolidate European leadership in the above key scientific and technology areas.
